The "MAKING WORK PAY" Credit
You may have noticed that your paycheck appears to have an increase. Some of your employees may even be approaching you about their paychecks appearing to be 'different'. This is due to 2009's economic stimulus payment called the "Making Work Pay" credit. Instead of receiving a special lump sum check mailed from the IRS, the new federal witholding tables released at the end of February, may have reduced the amount of federal income tax withheld from wages, thereby increasing net pays. Essentially, the credit will be spread over the course of paychecks received from spring until the end of this year. While it does depend on what employees claim on their Form W4 (which employers should always keep on file), many higher income taxpayers will see little to no change in take home pay. However, all eligible taxpayers will need to claim this credit when they file their 2009 income tax returns. Employees should look at the effect this has on their income and whether or not they wish to increase the amount of federal currently claimed. Direct employees to the IRS website (www.irs.gov), and search for Publication 919 for further information.
